Design concept

To continue to experience the path of the architecture skyline, in Spring 2021, I opened a new topic for my new skyline which called "the taste of the Spring in Seoul." I'm getting the feeling that people really love spring which a season overflowing with symbolism. It is a transitional time of year, when the cold and dark dwindle away and the rains of rebirth fall upon the Earth. The light begins to shine brightly once more. Simply speaking, spring is the season of new beginnings and everything is new.

Seoul is the capital and largest city in South Korea (한국). It's considered a megacity because it has a population of over ten million people. Seoul is a special city that also contains much traditional architecture and tall buildings as well as famous landmarks.

What landmarks are included in this model?

From the left to right, I have the National Folk Museum of Korea (국립민속박물관), Namdaemun Gate (Sungnyemun Gate) (숭례문), The 63 Building (63 빌딩), Bukchon Hanok Village (북촌한옥마을), Namsan Seoul (서울) The N Seoul Tower (N서울타워), Myeong-dong (명동) Shopping Walk, Seokchon Lake Park (석촌호수공원), and Lotte World Tower (롯데월드타워).

Talking about tradition and the history of architecture, I built the National Folk Museum of Korea (국립민속박물관), Namdaemun Gate (Sungnyemun Gate) (숭례문), and Bukchon Hanok Village (북촌한옥마을) with the dark and quiet colors of lego bricks on this skyline in order to draw up a picture about the silence of historic architecture in South Korea.

Although I had a simple color layout, the whole skyline I put some tiny cherry blossom trees to bring vibrant colors and fragrant scent to the Seoul city skyline. That's the main point I wanted to achieve in my design.

Looking at the 63 Building (63 빌딩) and Lotte World Tower (롯데월드타워) which are two buildings carrying symbols of modern architecture. Especially, Lotte World Tower (롯데월드타워) is the skyscraper in the city. Actually, I scaled down this tower as well as every building on the skyline model. I used elements of lego bricks with the same technique as real building, I think.

Furthermore, I designed the tiny Myeong-dong (명동) Shopping Walk closed to the Bukchon Hanok Village (북촌한옥마을) on the skyline model. In fact, Myeong-dong is a popular street for shopping and a crowded street in the city.

My favorite part of the model is Namsan Seoul (서울) and The N Seoul Tower (N서울타워) as well as the elements of building Seokchon Lake Park (석촌호수공원) with tiny cherry blossom trees. I believe that they are the power of the architecture's perspective. They lied in the center of the horizontal line on the skyline which created the pay attention for the builder, feel very tiny, very neat, and simple.

H.A Studio (H.A 創作室), (as known as V.Boi Design Studio) is a small studio where specializes in the design and development of architectural models and as well as the re-design of famous icon landmark buildings, houses, and skylines in the world with small scales by Lego bricks. I always love architecture and Lego. As a designer, I'd like to bring whole historical and cultural knowledge in architecture, and life into the Lego world for all ages in order to achieve the term "Play & Learn."

Seoul Skyline 2021 and Sungnyemun Gate

Through the model, we can both play and learn about the landmarks, historical and modern architecture of Seoul city as well as welcome a blooming spring of cherry trees in South Korea. I think that is a great idea for Korea's blend of historical and modern architecture with this realistic Lego brick model for which I would show what Seoul is. After the Taipei skyline in 2020, of course, the Seoul skyline in 2021 is my favorite second skyline in Asia that I designed. Every single detail I designed will be telling you about the architectural essence, culture, and splendor of Seoul with these landmarks magnificent that bring together. In the perspective view of the design, I believe that Seoul is such an amazing, and beautiful city when completed in Lego bricks!

Seoul (서울)

Seoul is the capital and largest city in South Korea (한국). It's considered a megacity because it has a population of over ten million people. Because of its very large population, Seoul is considered a global city and it is the center of South Korea's economy, culture, and politics. Throughout its history, Seoul was known by a number of different names, and the name Seoul itself is believed to have originated from the Korean word for the capital city, Seoraneol.

National Folk Museum of Korea (국립민속박물관)

The National Folk Museum of Korea displays the culture and folk history of the Korean people from prehistoric times to the end of the Joseon Dynasty. Since its establishment, the museum has dedicated itself to studying and researching the folk history of Korea, and collecting artifacts from different Korean regions in order to pass on an insight into the lifestyle and culture of Koreans. The museum achieves this by offering visitors various seminars, exhibitions, performance art, concerts, and hands-on activities. Located on the grounds of Gyeongbokgung Palace, the National Folk Museum of Korea is well known for its beautiful architecture. The building was constructed in the traditional Korean style comprising several stories with a pagoda on top. The three main exhibition halls at the museum cover different aspects of Korean life, as well as displaying various local costumes, musical instruments, and festivals.

Namdaemun Gate (Sungnyemun Gate) (숭례문)

Namdaemun is Korea’s first national treasure, and its original name is Sungnyemun. Namdaemun is the largest castle gate stone structure with an arched entrance in the middle. There’s a column on top of a platform, raising the roof, distinguishing the upper stories and lower stories of the building. A passageway for traffic is located at the east and west ends of the gate.

Different from the other gates, Namdaemun’s tablet has Sungnyemun written vertically. When the first king of the Joseon Dynasty, Lee Seong-Gye (reign 1335-1408), had constructed the capital city, he believed that fire will reach Gyeongbokgung Palace, as well as the capital city as Mt. Gwanaksan of Seoul, is shaped like fire according to feng-shui principles. Sungnyemun’s name means fire, which is from the harmony of the Five Elements and if written vertically, the Chinese character ‘fire’ looks as if it is providing protection. This was Taejong’s (1367-1422) first son, Yangnyeongdaegun’s (1394-1462) famous writing.

The 63 Building (63 빌딩)

At standing 249 meters (817 ft) high and comprising of 60 floors and three basement levels, 63 Square is one of Korea’s tallest and most recognized buildings before 2017. 63 Square’s distinctive gold color is the real thing; each of the 14,000 panes of glass was coated with a thin film of 24-carat gold which catches the sunshine, reflecting gold, red, and silver as the sun sets, giving the tower its stunning multi-colored sheen.

Bukchon Hanok Village (북촌한옥마을)

The traditional Korean Bukchon Hanok Village is a short walk from the Gyeongbokgung Palace, one of the main attractions in the city. Popular with tourists the narrow and winding streets of this area are filled with hanoks, traditional Korean houses scattered across hills overlooking the city. It’s a great place for photography and to capture shots in the traditional Korean dresses known as hanboks.

The traditional village is composed of many alleys, Hanok, and is preserved to show a 600-year-old urban environment. The name Bukchon, which literally translates to "northern village," came about as the neighborhood lies north of two significant Seoul landmarks, Cheonggyecheon Stream and Jongno.

Today, many of these hanoks operate as cultural centers, guesthouses, restaurants, and tea houses, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience, learn, and immerse themselves in traditional Korean culture. As Bukchon Hanok Village is an actual neighborhood with people's homes, visitors are advised to be respectful at all times while looking around.

Namsan Seoul (서울)

Namsan Mountain (South Mountain) is a peak, 262 meters (860 ft) high, in the Jung-gu district of south-central Seoul, South Korea. Although known as Mongmyeoksan, or 목멱산 / 木覓山 in the past, it is now commonly referred to as Mt. Namsan. It offers some hiking, picnic areas, and views of downtown Seoul's skyline. The N Seoul Tower is located on top of Mt. Namsan.

The N Seoul Tower (N서울타워)

Measuring 777 feet from its base to its top and sitting at the summit of the 797-foot-tall Namsan Mountain, N Seoul Tower rises approximately 1,574 feet above sea level. It is the highest point in Seoul, offering 360-degree views of the entire city. It was also the very first general radio wave tower in South Korea and continues to broadcast signals for media outlets such as SBS, MBC, KBS, and FM.

Myeong-dong (명동) Shopping Walk

Myeong-dong is a great shopping area packed in Seoul with international fashion brands, luxury department stores, and homegrown cosmetics shops. Casual eateries offer Korean dumplings and ginseng chicken soup, while street vendors sell Japanese and Thai snacks. Shows mixing folk music and drama are staged at Myeongdong Nanta Theatre. Nearby 19th-century Myeong-dong Cathedral features a Gothic-style bell tower.

Seokchon Lake Park (석촌호수공원)

Seokchon Lake Park is recommended as one of the best walking courses in Seoul. It is a great place to walk throughout the four seasons during day or night, but especially in spring when flowers are in full bloom. The lake has two parts: the East Lake and West Lake. East Lake is a good place for jogging, a resting place for nearby official workers, and walks for bicycles. The West Lake is good for having fun since it contains the Magic Island of Lotte World and Seoul Norimadang.

The Seokchon Lake Cherry Blossom Festival is one of the most representative spring festivals in Seoul. The festival has many events such as shows performed by popular singers and amateur performance teams. During the festival season, the Lotte World Tower at Seokchon Lake and the Magic Island combine with cherry blossoms, making a beautiful landscape.

Lotte World Tower (롯데월드타워)

At 555 meters, Lotte World Tower is the tallest building in South Korea. Taking inspiration from traditional Korean art forms in the design of the various interior program spaces, the sleek tapered form of Lotte World Tower will stand out from Seoul’s rocky, mountainous topography. The design of the tower melds a modern aesthetic with forms inspired by Korean ceramics, porcelain, and calligraphy. The seam that runs from top to bottom of the structure gestures toward the old center of the city. The elegance of form was one of the prime objectives, following the desire of stakeholders to bestow a beautiful monument to the capital city skyline. Exterior materials will be light-toned silver glass accented by a filigree of white lacquered metal.
